MRCOG Degree Examination

History
Before the 20th century, women’s health was handled by women like untrained midwives. Though physicians arrived on the scene in the 17th century, there was no antenatal care, no surgery, and obstetrics was restricted to the bare process of delivering the child.

According to the RCOG website, A college of physicians was established in 1518. A guild consisting of surgeons was formed in 1540. The two bodies, together with the Society of Apothecaries (established in 1617) and the universities took charge of medical education and assessing the competencies of physicians and surgeons.
Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G) were recognized as specialties in the mid-19th century. Numerous specialist societies came into existence. However, it was realized that establishing a separate college was essential to provide the obstetrics and gynecology discipline its place in medical practice.
His Majesty King George VI in 1938 granted the “Royal” title to the college.
