In our modern society, aging has become one of the most common problems as it brings senior individuals various social, mental, and physical health issues. Dr. Krishna Bahadur Bohara has conducted a study that aims to determine the core factors associated with stress Problems and suggest viable solutions to reduce such problems with the aging population.
This study utilizes 40 senior citizens who are members of elder societies of ward number-2 of the Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan in Nepal from the age bracket ranging from 65 years above for the study.
The study reveals that self-reported chronic illnesses among the elderly were hypertension 22%, diabetes 15%, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases 19%, cardiac problems, and joint problems 11%. Moreover, 21% had a hearing impairment, and 11% had eyesight impairment. Concerning functional impairment, 51% were partially dependent on performing some of the daily living activities.
How Do These Diseases Affect Their Mental Health?
Unknown to many, these health issues have a more profound impact on the minds of the elderly. Not feeling themselves and not being able to perform day-to-day activities further damages their self-esteem, limiting them from believing in their capacity to lead an everyday life.
Moreover, this severely damages their physiological capabilities in the long term, leading them to develop various physiological disorders, increasing stress levels, and ultimately leading to low life quality.
It’s essential to identify and treat these mental ailments in senior citizens. These complications don’t stop at the mental torment of these individuals. They can also make it harder to manage their other health problems. This issue is particularly critical to their survival if those health problems are chronic in nature.
